Brian Gavin Signature Blue Diamonds

Q:

I am currently on the lookout for a diamond and pendant setting as a 10th wedding anniversary present for my wife. I’m in Australia and I wouldn’t have decided to make an online diamond purchase if it hadn’t been for your excellent site and supplier recommendations.

My budget is about $2000 US for the diamond and setting, carat weight of between 0.6 and 0.7ct, colour and clarity of I-J/VS-SI eye clean in a hope to maximize bang for buck. I wish to go for a four pronged pendant setting to match earrings and each retailer has one that is suitable.

I have become fascinated with the Brian Gavin Blue range after reading plenty of positive things about them here and like the following:

I also like this diamond from Zoara, being the largest at 0.70ct even though the cut grade isn’t as high, but to my untrained eye the arrows look great in the picture:

The BG Blue has an indented natural inclusion….is it something to avoid? I think I’m leaning towards the BG Blue but I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Many thanks,

Larry

Hey Larry,

I’m glad that ODBA has been helpful in your diamond research! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂

I think the BGD Blue Signature diamonds are a great way to get a super-ideal hearts and arrows diamond for a great price, especially as you are looking for a pendant that is in the ‘J’ color range. As you already know, the blue fluorescence helps to cancel out any minor warmth in a near-colorless diamond. I prefer the BGD .614ct J SI1 for $1,539.00 as the light performance is superior. The SI1’s grade making inclusions are a few feathers, but these aren’t under the table facet and so aren’t readily noticeable. This diamond is eye-clean.

I do not recommend the Zoara diamond because it has a very high crown angle which is not conducive to optimum light performance.

Indented naturals are nothing to worry about. They are almost always found on the girdle of a diamond and are actually just a portion of the diamond that hasn’t been polished into a facet. Diamond cutters often leave a natural when they are conserving weight (often to conserve maximum possible diameter). In both of the diamonds specified above, the roundness and symmetry of each diamond is not affected.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Best,

Liz
